Ledger.com/Start® - Ledger® | Getting started
Welcome to Start With Ledger, your introductory guide to setting up and using a Ledger hardware wallet for the first time. Whether you’re transferring crypto from an exchange, upgrading from a mobile wallet, or protecting long-term holdings, this guide will help you begin safely and confidently.
In the world of digital assets, security is everything. Online wallets, centralized exchanges, and cloud-based services leave private keys exposed to online attacks, technical failures, and corporate shutdowns. A Ledger hardware wallet gives you complete and independent control over your crypto, because your private keys are stored offline, where hackers cannot reach them. Setting up a Ledger device takes only a few minutes and ensures that your assets are protected for the long run.
Why Choose Ledger?
Ledger devices provide a secure method for managing cryptocurrency by combining offline storage with a simple user experience. Your private keys never leave the device, which means even if your computer or smartphone is infected with malware, your funds remain protected.
Key benefits
- Offline security: Private keys are generated and stored inside the hardware device.
- Full control: You—not an exchange—own your digital assets.
- Protection against hacking attempts: No remote access to keys is possible.
- Support for thousands of cryptocurrencies and tokens.
- Easy management through Ledger Live.
If you’re ready to protect what you’ve invested, let’s begin.
Step 1: Open Your Box and Inspect Your Device
Inside the package, you will find:
- The Ledger hardware wallet (Nano S Plus or Nano X)
- USB connection cable
- Recovery phrase cards
- Instructions and documentation
Before continuing, check the packaging for tampering. A genuine Ledger device never arrives with a pre-written recovery phrase. If you find words already printed anywhere, stop and contact support—this is a security red flag.
Step 2: Download and Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official application that lets you manage your wallet, organize accounts, and perform crypto transactions.
How to download
- Visit the official Ledger website.
- Navigate to the Download Ledger Live section.
- Select your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android).
- Install and launch the application.
Avoid downloading from search engine ads or unofficial websites—these are common phishing traps.
When you open Ledger Live, select “Set up a new device.”
Step 3: Initialize Your Ledger and Create Your PIN
Connect your Ledger device to your computer or phone. You will be guided to create a PIN code, which protects your wallet if it is ever misplaced.
Choose a PIN only you can remember. Avoid obvious combinations like birthdays, repeating digits, or sequences.
After confirming your PIN, your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the only backup of your wallet. Anyone who has these 24 words can control your crypto—so protect them carefully.
Step 4: Securely Record Your Recovery Phrase
Write down the 24 words in the exact displayed order. Use the recovery cards from the box, not digital notes or cloud storage.
Rules for protecting your phrase
- Do not take a photo
- Do not store it in email, text messages, or online files
- Do not type the phrase on a keyboard
- Never share it with anyone, including supposed support agents
Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase—anyone who does is attempting theft. If you ever lose the device, the 24 words allow you to recover everything on a new Ledger.
Some users upgrade to metal backup plates for fireproof, waterproof storage.
Step 5: Install Crypto Apps and Add Accounts
To manage a cryptocurrency, install its corresponding app on your device.
How to install apps
- Open Ledger Live and go to My Ledger
- Connect and approve the device
- Choose the crypto app you want (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum)
- Select Install
Next, add an account inside Ledger Live:
- Go to Accounts
- Choose Add account
- Select the cryptocurrency type
- Confirm on your Ledger screen
Your wallet is now ready to receive funds.
Step 6: Receive Crypto Into Your Ledger
You can now transfer assets from another wallet or from an exchange.
To receive
- Click Receive in Ledger Live.
- Choose the account for your asset.
- Confirm the displayed wallet address on both your computer and the device screen.
- Copy and share only the verified address.
The hardware screen is the ultimate source of truth. If the address differs, cancel immediately—your computer may be compromised.
Step 7: Send Crypto Securely
Sending crypto is just as simple, but includes final on-device approval.
- Select Send in Ledger Live.
- Enter the destination address and amount.
- Review the fees and details.
- Accept the transaction on your Ledger device.
If anything looks incorrect, reject the transaction.
Best Practices for Long-Term Safety
- Keep your firmware updated using Ledger Live.
- Turn on password lock for Ledger Live access.
- Store your recovery phrase offline in multiple safe locations.
- Be cautious of social media, messaging scams, and fake support accounts.
- Research unfamiliar tokens and blockchains.
Crypto security begins with personal discipline.
What Makes Self-Custody Important
When assets remain on an exchange, you rely on that company’s security and policies. History has shown that even major platforms can fail, freeze withdrawals, or be hacked.
With Ledger:
- You hold the keys
- You decide how and when to use your assets
- No third party can restrict your access
Self-custody is the foundation of true financial freedom.
